A blog waiting to happen

Obviously it’s been a long time since I’ve posted to my blog, and Project 365 has fallen off. Perhaps I’ll try again next year. More than likely, I’ll go for a Project 52, sticking to one post a week.

To face the facts, I burned out on Project 365, and I was busy with classes, my college’s newspaper, and my somewhat sporadic social life.

Since my last post, I’ve been elected as the Student State President of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges, won a few more awards, and realized that I have no idea what I really want to do with my life.

However, I want to become more active with my life. I want to push myself to do more in journalism, become a more active, influential member of the internet communities I am apart of, and expand my overall presence online.

I wouldn’t say no to a paying writing gig, either.

Until next time, blogosphere.

Project 365 – Days 40 through 44: Late nights with photo assignments and homework

(February 9, 2013)

After covering baseball and softball games at Cosumnes River College, I had a long night of sorting through photos, rosters and my game notes to pick out the best photos that would lend themselves to the best caption. (My Flickr sets, including my sports photos)

February 10 2013

I was at the kitchen table the night before for caption writing because this is how my desk looked. Yikes! Yes, I’ve cleaned it since then.

February 11 2013

Another late night shot where I had been writing captions for a photo assignment (this time a club profile), as well as reading for my history paper and scanning old film negatives for my Photoshop class.

February 12 2013

After my long day of school on Tuesday (7:30 a.m. until 9 p.m.), I had to head back over to Hookaholics for that review that my friends and I were working on for The Connection. We needed better photos with people. While I was shooting the photos, I noticed someone was smoking out of a pineapple. Yeah, that was pretty epic to see.

February 13 2013

To conclude this assignment themed post is from yet another late night. This time I snapped a photo while I was half asleep, trying to finish my history paper. I was up until 3 a.m. writing, and had to get up around 6 a.m. for my history class at 7:30 a.m. Gross.

Project 365 – Day 39: I tried hookah for the first time

February 8 2013

I went to a hookah lounge for the first time with a couple of friends. It was actually for an assignment on newspaper, and I tagged along to let my friend use my camera. I ended up taking a lot of shots for myself, though. Man, talk about low light photography. Anyways, this just looked kinda cool.

I really like using my 50mm at f/1.4 I should use it more often, I think.

Project 365 – Days 36 and 37: High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography!

In class yesterday we learned about HDR photography, and I was excited. I know a lot of people, especially the ones I’ve met through photo classes, think HDR is overdone/terrible. I like the overprocessed look of HDR photography, though. I’m not sure why, but I was drawn to it when first shown some examples last semester.

February 5 2013

`This photo I shot outside of campus, and it has a funny story behind it. I was standing out by some cars in the parking lot to get far enough away to get a good composition with my 50mm f/1.4 and a golf cart rode up to me. A Los Rios officer was asking me what I was doing out in the parking lot (what does he think I was doing standing next to a tripod pointing at a brick wall?) and telling me, repeatedly, that I was on camera and everything I was doing was on camera. I replied by telling him I was in a photography class at the time and I was working on an assignment, but that I was glad there were patrols on the campus on the lookout for suspicious people. He replied by telling me “no, we just have a lot of cameras.” Right!

February 6 2013

This second photo is the tree in my yard, again! I thought it would be a great subject for another HDR photo.

Project 365 – Days 31 through 33: Experimental shots

January 31 2013

(Jan. 31, 2013) I checked out a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L lens from the Cosumnes River College newspaper so I could shoot a softball game. I put a 2x lens extender (which I also borrowed from the newspaper) so I could take some test shots. The helicopter was just a speck in the viewfinder, and I cropped like crazy, but this is what came out. I’m surprised at the stop-motion and detail to be able to read “Police.” I want this lens! Anyone feeling generous?

February 1 2013

(Feb. 1, 2013) My Photoshop teacher very briefly showed the class how to get this “color burst” effect to black and white photos. He just breezed through it as a demonstration to show us the wonders of Photoshop, but it was simple enough and I wanted to try it out. So here’s a shot of my awesome Spearmint Chapstick!

February 2 2013

(Feb. 2, 2013) I shot Cosumnes River College’s softball team playing their first home game: A doubleheader against Lassen Community College. I had autofocus on (I’m sorry!), and some freaky things can happen when not manual focusing. This picture is one such freaky thing. I thought it looked cool, though, so I saved the picture.
